Editorial Policy

Every review, comparison, and recommendation on PortablePowerPick is produced independently. This page explains how we work, what standards we hold ourselves to, and how we handle mistakes.

Independence

No manufacturer, retailer, or advertiser has editorial input into our content. We do not accept sponsored reviews, paid placements in rankings, or pre-written content from brands. When a company provides a review unit, we disclose it. Our ratings and recommendations are based solely on our testing and analysis.

We participate in affiliate programs (including Amazon Associates and direct brand programs) to fund our testing. Affiliate relationships never influence which products we recommend or how we rate them. A product that earns a 3.5/5 keeps that score regardless of its commission rate. See our full affiliate disclosure for details.

How We Source Products

We purchase most products at retail price. When a manufacturer offers a review unit, we accept it only if we can test it under the same conditions as products we buy ourselves, with no obligation to publish a positive review. We always disclose when a review unit was provided by the manufacturer.

Testing Standards

Every portable power station goes through the same standardized testing protocol before we publish a review. Our process covers:

  • Capacity verification: Full drain from 100% to 0% under controlled loads to measure actual usable watt-hours vs. advertised specs.
  • Charging speed: Wall, solar, and car charging timed from 0 to 80% and 0 to 100% using calibrated watt meters.
  • Output testing: Sustained load tests at 50%, 75%, and 100% of rated output to verify stability and efficiency.
  • Appliance compatibility: Running real devices (mini fridges, CPAP machines, laptops, power tools) with measured runtimes.
  • Build quality: Physical inspection of ports, displays, handles, weight verification, and general durability.
  • Noise measurement: Fan noise at idle, moderate load, and full load measured at one meter distance.

See our scoring methodology for how test results translate into ratings.

Content Accuracy

We fact-check specifications against manufacturer documentation and verify key claims through our own testing. When our measured values differ from advertised specs, we report both and explain the discrepancy. Prices are checked at the time of publication and updated periodically, but may change without notice.

If we discover an error in published content, we correct it promptly and transparently. See our corrections policy for how we handle mistakes.

Updates and Freshness

Reviews are updated when significant new information becomes available: firmware updates that change performance, major price drops, or new competing products that change the landscape. Every review displays a “last updated” date so you know how current the information is.

Best-of and comparison pages are reviewed at least quarterly to ensure rankings reflect the current market.

Who Writes Our Content

PortablePowerPick is founded and run by Alex B., who has hands-on experience with portable power stations across real-world conditions, including extended power outages in Ukraine. All reviews reflect firsthand testing experience, not rewritten spec sheets.
